Piezo Ultrasonic Scaler

Dentist Towson

A Piezo Ultrasonic Scaler , often referred to as a ‘Cavitron’, is a crucial piece of equipment used to assist a Dental Hygienist in calculus removal. Most recently it is has become an integral tool in the treatment of periodontal disease.

Use of a Piezo-type Ultrasonic scaler provides a high level of clinical efficacy, allowing the hygienists of Ousborne and Keller to remove large amounts of tenacious calculus with much less force, thereby saving the hygienists ’ hands from fatigue and repetitive stress injuries.

In the past 20 years, non-surgical periodontal therapy has advanced beyond basic calculus removal. Ultrasonic therapy now focuses on the etiology of periodontal disease by disruption of bacterial biofilms and stimulation of the host’s immune response systems.

The Piezo scaler is very effective in removing all calcium deposits above and below the gumline, and debriding/cleaning the deeper pockets of bacterial plaque that invades the surrounding supportive tissues.

How It Works

The tip of the Piezo Ultrasonic scaler vibrates, which produces twenty to thirty thousand sound waves per second, sometimes emitting a high pitched tone. A water jet is used along with the vibrating tip and when the sound waves combine with the water, the water molecules are blasted apart releasing oxygen molecules into the area. Since the bacteria that cause gum disease are anaerobic, meaning they cannot exist in the presence of oxygen, they are destroyed by this therapeutic effect of oxygenation. This means that the bacteria that cause gum disease can be destroyed and healing of the tissues can be initiated, simply by delivering oxygen to specific sites.

More often than not, the Piezo Ultrasonic scaler makes it possible for Drs. Ousborne and Keller to assist our patients in their endeavor to control periodontal disease without the need for additional chemicals, antiseptics or antibiotics which reflects our professional commitment to providing the best dental care possible.
